Chennai Express blocks the way for Main Hoon Shahid Afridi in Pakistan

Following the overruling of an import ban on Indian movies in Pakistan, this Eid will see the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express in the country which has caused the delay of Main Hoon Shahid Afridi. The delaying decision has been taken by the Main Hoon Shahid Afridi makers to avoid a box-office clash with SRK-starrer Chennai Express.
MHSH`s writer Vasay Chaudhry expressed his regret that the most anticipated Pakistani film this year has been facing a postponement due to some last minute decisions. Earlier the movie had to be postponed because of film editor Azam Khan’s demise and the team had to travel abroad to carry on with the post-production process. But still the final prints were not ready on time. On the other hand, Shah Rukh was spotted partying with co-star Deepika Padukone in the Indian Capital.

While walking the red carpet at the event Shah Rukh, clad in his usual three-piece suit, looked worn out as he posed for the shutterbugs. He said, "I am exhausted as I have been out the whole day. But I am really excited about the movie and can't wait to see how the audience reacts to it.” By his side Deepika looked refreshing although in her knee length floral dress. She said, "I adore Shah Rukh. No one makes me more loved on movie sets than Shah Rukh.” The party, hosted by Audi Delhi Central, also saw the likes of director Rohit Shetty, Rashi Todd (Managing Director Audi – Delhi Central & Gurgaon), Mikey Todd, Kalyani Chawla Saha, Ayaan Ali Khan, Amaan Ali Khan, Rina Dhaka, Abraham, Rakesh Thakore and many others.

Merits of Chennai Express

The big release this Friday is Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer Chennai Express that has already created a boom amongst the audience. This flick directed by Rohit Shetty is a romantic entertainer and will probably cross the 100 crore mark as the makers are promoting the film extravagantly.
There are certain factors that will help this venture make a sure shot success. First of all, this film is directed by Rohit Shetty, who has the record of giving blockbuster hits. He is also been labeled as the president of Bollywood’s Rs 100 crore club. Next factor that can add one to the achievement to this venture is that the king Khan is doing the film in his own genre i.e. romance.

Shah Rukh has earlier teamed up with Deepika and their collaboration made a spark in Om Shanti Om. This time also the couple is supposed to create the same magic. The movie is releasing on the festive occasion of Eid and so can generate more revenue for the producers. Other than that, this flick is first of its kind that has sold its satellite rights at a whopping Rs 48 crore. Meanwhile, the makers of Main Hoon Shahid Afridi have also postponed the release of their movie in Pakistan. Well, it is plus point for Shah Rukh’s film there also

The Smurfs 2 Review - Feeling Blue

Where do I begin? It goes without saying that The Smurfs 2 was made keeping in mind a particular target audience.. a demographic to which I fortunately do not belong anymore. My reactions ranged from fighting to keep my eyes open to cringing at all the syrupy sweetness. There have been many cutesy films with sugar overdose, but what makes them bearable is that there's something in them for adults too. The Smurfs 2, on the other hand, is relentlessly childish.

If I am being honest here, I must let this be known that my six year old self probably would have enjoyed this movie. Heck, he had a great time watching Dunston Checks In and Baby's Day Out. Why I am skeptical about recommending this movie to kids of today is because they have been audience to works far more better than this film.

I have not seen Smurfs in any medium before today and I know close to nothing about the mythology. My beef is not with the characters, but with this particular film that I had the misfortune of sitting through. The sense of wonder which I believe is a must in every film targeted at kids is conspicuously amiss. The lines are inundated with puns which you might find funny if you are six.

Because God forbid Hollywood made a movie for kids without a message in it, The Smurfs 2 has a thing going about relationship between a child and his/her stepfather. Not to sound too cynical, but this sort of superficial window dressing is not likely to make any impact whatsoever.

The Smurfs 2 is to the kids what the Transformers movie is to us adults- we are better off without them. Let's nip it in the bud and save our children from more Smurfs sequels.

The Conjuring

The Conjuring is a textbook horror film. The success of a horror film depends on what textbook you are using and the grimoire James Wan picks up is a bloody good one. There are jump scares, sneaky scares, eerie images, silent jolts, goosebump-inducing revelations and also a few jokes to give some relief.

It has ghosts, witches, demons, creepy dolls, creaking doors, it has everything! What it doesn’t have is the one thing that has ruined horror films lately – gore. Thank god for that. What’s more, there is a good mix of original scares and clichéd scares – plain old spooks. A split-second moment, which I liked the most, involves a white sheet. Remember ghouls under white sheets? That.

Here’s the thing: If you’re a fan of horror films, get to that damn theater. Right. Now.

The first thing I noticed about The Conjuring when the film started was the old-school approach adopted by the filmmaker. The way the title of the film fills a black screen with a pale yellow font. The next thing we see is the camera zooming in towards a house.

Zooms. I thought we lost them in the 70s. At least, using them well is a thing of the past. There isn’t much use of visual effects except those that could have been done in the past century. The tracking shots, focus shifts, the shadows and other basic camera movements become the apparatus used for creating dread and horror and not cheap trickery. It is pure craft that creates the retro feel, which makes it more authentic as the film is set in the 70s, also on a true story.

I was reminded most of The Amityville Horror (1979) while watching this film (I find The Conjuring a better film though). The funny part is that The Amityville Horror is based on a true story and that true story is one of the cases handled by Ed and Lorraine Warren. The couple played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are what you call ghosthunters, or ghostbusters. The haunting of the Perron family was a case they chose not to discuss and now we get to see it dramatized on film.

Infestation. Oppression. Possession. These are the three stages of a haunting as prescribed by the Warrens. Every good horror film lets us into its world by making us a part of the findings. First, 'what' is happening. Second, 'how' it is happening. Finally, we discover 'why' through the rest of the film. An interesting plot (there is a difference between original and interesting) like this one always helps.

What helps more is when you have good actors. Lili Taylor and Patrick Wilson are strong but the film belongs to Vera Farmiga. I was immensely impressed by her performances in Up in the Air (2009), The Boy in Striped Pyjamas (2008), Source Code (2011), Orphan (2009), Bates Motel (TV show) and mostly in her directorial debut – Higher Ground (2011). This time I was happy to see her make a mark in a mainstream film. She plays a clairvoyant, the character that makes us feel safe in an otherwise menacing territory because she knows things nobody else does and uses her gifts for the higher good.

There is one sequence that gave me a 5-minuter chill with full-bodied goosebumps. The Warrens go to rescue their daughter from an unfortunate situation. I find it difficult to watch children in peril. While I was gripped in sheer suspense, I could feel the dread mounting and expanding as it progressed.

This film reminded me of old classics of the genre, especially The Exorcist (1973), The Innocents (1961), The Haunting (1963) and Poltergeist (1982). There is also a tiny homage to The Birds (1963) near the end. Sure, the story isn’t as great and lacks depth. If only the filmmaker had spent more time on the script, we would have had a truly great horror film. But that's a minor nitpick. This film is darn good.

The horror genre usually runs on autopilot nowadays. It is refreshing to see someone giving us an occasional bump. James Wan has directed several horror films before (Saw, Insidious and Dead Silence) but it is this one that cements him as a luminary of the genre.

I’d like to end this review by being a bit more direct.

Prepare to get scared. Go to the theater. Right. Now.

Wolverine

The good news is that Wolverine finally gets the film he deserves. The bad news is that in these times when films like Man of Steel and Iron Man 3 are recognized as great superhero films, this one may not get the amount of love it deserves. I hope it will but I won’t be surprised if people don’t warm up to it. This year’s other two superhero films were all right, bigger in scale but just not awesome enough. Actually, they weren’t films in the first place. One was an action montage and the other a slight comedy. The Wolverine is a film, it tells a story with characters it makes you care for. Better still, there are scenes with good dialogue.

This time the action shifts to 21st century Japan (but begins with the 20th century). Samurais – check. Yakuza – check. Ninjas – check. While the plot of the film or even its originality isn’t its biggest asset, the merits of this film outnumber the minuses, the prime one being its earnestness. As far as real action is concerned, there is one scene atop a bullet train that is wonderfully thrilling and fun. There are also fight scenes that involve you as a viewer. The best part is that the action doesn’t exist for the sake of it.

I was most impressed by James Mangold’s decision to make this a quieter film when he could have easily made an ‘Adamantium claws vs. Samurai blade’ slam-bam action film. Visually, the film has a terrific combination of it being dark yet not joyless. Japan is filmed in all its exotic glory like how it would exist in a comic book. Or probably something straight out of a Jidaigeki. The dark element does not come from how the film looks or how heavily gloomy the music is but by the character and his complexities. Surface level stuff, but passable.

The film begins with Logan (Hugh Jackman) saving the life of a Japanese officer, Yashida, after the bombing of Nagasaki. Yashida wishes to see him once before he passes on and offers him the gift of mortality. (A quick recap – Wolverine is probably 256 years old and is immortal). The Wolverine is indestructible. He doesn’t feel pain and can never get killed. He is a mutant with adamantium claws. This film turns it all on its head. His immortality is at risk. He is in pain through most of the film. Blind fans may not be happy seeing their favorite mutant slowly becoming powerless but I was happy that we get to see him being vulnerable and not laboriously fight through a film and bore us on the way like the Origins film did. We don’t want to see him as weak but we want to see him bounce back. It’s like a spring that goes two ways and not only one.

The film is essentially about Logan trying to move on from his past. The things that bind him. Be it his attachment to Jean Grey or the burden of his powers. There are 3 other female characters in the film. A villainess - Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova), a love interest- Mariko (Tao Okamato) and a red-haired mutant- Yukio (Rila Fukushima) who can see the future (and thank god we don’t see her visions in weird effects-heavy flashes). It’s been a long time since we had a diabolic villainess. She may be one-dimensional but exactly the sweet poison required. Yukio is a sort of sidekick to the Wolverine and not in a bad way. There is a scene where she perfoms her duties while Logan performs an open heart surgery that is more thrilling than any thunderous climactic showdown.

The ending is like how it should be. No big explosions, no destruction. Only man-to-man combat. (Or woman to man and other permutations). Yes, the final half hour does not match up to the rest of the film but I was rather pleased at not being bombarded with mindless action. And then there is the Silver Samurai who gets his share of being badass.

When the film is wrapped up, we get a post-credits scene that would have all X-Men fans collectively salivating. I’m not the biggest fan of the series but even I felt like I was handed a massive treat. Please do not leave your seat and wait till the main end credits are done. The wait for X-Men: Days of Future Past begins!

The Wolverine isn’t as good as X2 (2003) or X-Men: First Class (2011) but hey, at least it isn’t X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). For my money, it is the most satisfying superhero film of 2013 so far

B.A. Pass Review

B.A. Pass is part pulp erotica and part realistic drama. It succeeds as a pulpy erotic drama where we see Mukesh (Shadab Kamal) get seduced by Sarika (Shilpa Shukla). It soon spirals into the chronicles of a gigolo which is compelling to watch. For the first 45 minutes, we see well-written and executed shades of grey. There is a particularly interesting scene, which involves a housewife with her afternoon delight and a TV serial discussion.

After one hour, we see the hope of the story heading in a new direction. Deepti Naval comes in and we get another good scene. Then comes a U-turn. The director decides to make it a film we have all seen before. Anything passes for a story these days, if it’s either “masala” or “reality”. It’s frustrating to see filmmakers with talent chose a path that has been walked before when they are capable of doing so much more. It makes less sense when we see it happen in a film like this one where, presumably you have no boundaries.

There is a sub-plot with Mukesh and his chess-playing friend which gets the worst climax possible. It is supposed to make us feel bad for the character and lament at the state of humanity. It is nothing more than an easy way out as far as the storytellers are concerned. You cannot offer us mediocrity under the guise of “aisa hi hota hai”. A film like this does not deserve a hackneyed conclusion.

The relationship between Mukesh and Sarika turns awry. The endless plot possibilities remain unexplored. The actors are always in top form. Shilpa Shukla is absolutely sensational. She has been seen in Chak De! India (2007) before and it would be great to see more of this talented actress. In a better film that deserves her acting virtuoso. Shadab Kamal is earnest and sincere in his protrayal of Mukesh. He handles the sex scenes with an assured maturity, acting with his eyes. Rajesh Sharma (Titu mama from Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana) is given a role that isn’t for comic relief. He plays the angry husband. This would have been another fascinating prospect. Yet, we see him become a villain. An unconvincing one at that.

A film about controversial topics like sex or even crime for that matter, do not necessarily need to be dire always. I wasn’t expecting the film to go the Magic Mike (2012) way where we see a quasi-comedy about a gigolo. But then again, such people don’t always need to be bad or be subjected to terrible fates. You can be a good person and be sexually active, you know? It’s what a lot of people are. A character can have more dimensions than two.

During the final half hour, the film does everything it can to ruin what it has set up before. Instead of expanding on the friend’s character, I wish we had seen more of Deepti Naval’s character or even had the husband’s character offer another side to the plot. Sadly, the film goes in a different direction, which only culminates with a dead end.

No Len Wiseman for the reboot of The Mummy

Len Wiseman has called it quits from Universal’s The Mummy reboot and the news has been confirmed by THR. Though nothing much was revealed behind the sudden exit, date issues have been blamed for the same.
Wiseman directed the Fox TV programme Sleepy Hollow and is scheduled to direct the first few episodes too. The director went on The Mummy’s board last year and was working with Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci along with Sean Daniels and Jim Jacks on the modern version of the story. The script has been written by Jon Spaihts.
No Len Wiseman for the reboot of The Mummy
Wiseman landed with the project as he has been quite successful in blending horror and action in his films. His successful Underworld movie franchise proves his talent at its best. His most recent work was 2012's Total Recall remake. Now the hunt for a new director for the project will begin on the part of Universal and the producers.

Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan Kapoor to debut in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s next directoria

After Anil Kapoor’s daughters Sonam and Rhea were launched into the industry, now it’s time for his son Harshvardhan Kapoor to make his space into Bollywood. Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has seen the work of Sonam Kapoor and is quite impressed with her acting skills. The director believes that her brother too will to be a gem and has offered him a role in his upcoming flick Mirza Sahiba.
Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan Kapoor to debut in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s next directorial
21-year-old Harshvardhan has been signed to play Mirza in the film while the female lead for portraying Sahiba is not finalized yet. Meanwhile, Omprakash Mehra has roped in Sonam and Waheeda for other main roles. Harshvardhan is right now assisting Anurag Kashyap in his venture Bombay Velvet. The Hindi drama Mirza Sahiba based on Punjabi folk is written by Gulzar and will go on floors the next year.

Deepika Padukone once again Shah Rukh Khan’s female lead in Happy New Year

Putting an end to all the speculations finally news has come up that it’s Deepika Padukone and not Katrina Kaif who will be paired opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan in Farah Khan’s next, Happy New Year. Reports say as Kat couldn’t take out time from her hectic schedule, Deepika is the obvious choice for the role.
Deepika Padukone once again Shah Rukh Khan’s female lead in Happy New Year
While Katrina has recently signed two new films, one with Kabir Khan for producer Sajid Nadiadwala opposite Saif Ali Khan and the other one is Abhishek Kapoor’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, she has been left with no time for any other project. One of the friends of Katrina said, “She would have loved to do Farah’s film. Farah initially wanted to sign a completely new girl for Happy New Year, but when she couldn’t find the right girl to play her leading lady, she zeroed in on Kat. The actress and Farah are very fond of each other ever since they worked together in Tees Maar Khan. The film’s failure did not affect their mutual fondness. To be in Farah’s next and that too with Shah Rukh with whom Katrina really hit off during Jab Tak Hai Jaan, would have been fab. She wanted to do Happy New Year but as Kat is committed to finish Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Dhoom 3 and Siddharth Anand’s Bang Bang before working for Kapoor’s and Khan’s films, she could not do it.” So obviously Kat’s loss has come out as Deepika’s one of the biggest gains ever in her booming career.

Kung Fu Panda’s legal trial goes in favour of DreamWorks Animation

Finally the world-famous studio DreamWorks Animation can breathe with relief. The studio was supposed to move court later this year against artist Jayme Gordon's claims that their creation Kung Fu Panda has been a stolen piece of work. But recently Gordon backed off all of a sudden to much pleasure of the studio.
Unlike other copyright claimants, Gordon was going well in the court with his claims after a summary judgment motion in April which would pose a massive threat to DA in the federal court. But after his decision to pull off from the trial it has been confirmed that the similar claims cannot be brought up once again and he will also get no settlement money. His dismissal papers also made it sure that no compensation money will be paid to him either. To recall the past Gordon claimed in his lawsuit that the "Kung Fu Panda property" was developed by him in the 90s.
Kung Fu Panda’s legal trial goes in favour of DreamWorks Animation
His creation featured "a Kung Fu fighting giant panda who likes to eat; his companion, a rare small red panda who also is a Kung Fu fighter; and a Kung Fu fighting super group known as the 'Five Fists of Fury' that consists of a tiger, crane, mantis, monkey and a venomless snake." He also submitted his 2000 copyright registration as his evidence and also the comparison which featured in his complaint. Gordon always upheld his claims that Kung Fu Panda was originally made by him and when asked if he had ever borrowed elements from other creators’ cartoons he answered, "No, I wouldn't say I took elements, no.” But DreamWorks’ lawyers believed the case to be something else. They also had their evidence ready to prove Gordon wrong and hence were getting ready with a 1996 Disney colouring book which would prove similarity to the work on Gordon’s 2000 registration. But before the company could come up with their presentation to dismiss Gordon’s appeal, the plaintiff himself decided to drop the matter

'Krrish 3' launch today

Having shared a fantastic rapport over the years, pairing for films like 'Kishen-Kanhaiya' (1990) and 'Khel' (1991), actor Anil Kapoor and director Rakesh Roshan go back a long way, personally and professionally. Naturally, when the latter asked Kapoor to emcee at the 'Krrish 3' media interaction at a theatre in Mumbai this evening, he immediately agreed.

Anil will introduce the film's actors and key technicians at the event and engage the lead actors — Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi andKangana Ranaut in a question-and-answer session.

Expect Kapoor to jazz up the event with his jhakaas humour and his camaraderie with buddy Guddu (as Rakesh Roshan is fondly known).
